- MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 - Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 - Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion 24 Jul 2026 MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 – Pietenpol Air Camper Wing Rear Strut Internal Corrosion Issue 1 of this MTD, issued in 2024, required inspection of the rear 'Jim Wills' type struts for corrosion, replacement of any corroded struts, and the drilling of a single drain hole in the end cap of each strut. MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 supersedes Issue 1 and introduces revised drain hole requirements based on feedback from the field. Aircraft fitted with Jim Wills rear wing struts must have the struts inspected for internal and external corrosion. For aircraft that have not previously complied with Issue 1, the requirements of Issue 2 must be completed before next flight. For aircraft that have already complied with Issue 1, the additional requirements introduced in Issue 2 must be completed by 31st December 2027. Please refer to the MTD-06-2024 Issue 2 document for full applicability, aircraft identification guidance, and compliance requirements. - MTD-01-2025 ISSUE 2 published - Zenair Tailplane Brackets | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back MTD-01-2025 ISSUE 2 published - Zenair Tailplane Brackets 28 Aug 2025 MTD-01-2025 - 'Inspection of horizontal stabiliser (tailplane) attachment brackets and associated hardware for cracks, looseness and other forms of distress' for Zenair CH601, CH650, CH701, CH750 and variants of these four models has been upissued to Issue 2. This is in order to correct an error in the 'Effective Date' of this MTD. This MTD can be found HERE and is also available below. A number of cases have been found whereby the structural integrity of the horizontal stabiliser mountings on the Zenair types identified above have been compromised by one or more of the following: cracking of the attachment brackets oversize holes loose rivets distorted and chafed brackets. These problems could occur due to a number of factors including poor build quality, a build-up of tolerances in the positioning or dimensions of the brackets, improper assembly, rough treatment or in-flight vibration. Failure of a tailplane attachment could result in degraded controllability in flight or loss of control. Special inspections of this area have been recommended by Zenair since January 2017, in their document ‘Mandatory Action. Jan. 2017 – Inspection of Horizontal Stabilizer tail attachment brackets’. This Mandatory Technical Directive mandates this safety action for aircraft operating on LAA Permits to Fly. 20250828 - MTD-01-2025 - Zenair Tailplane Brackets - Issue 2 .pdf Download PDF • 183KB Next Previous
- New LAA Inspector - Tomas del Carpio | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back New LAA Inspector - Tomas del Carpio 15 Aug 2025 We are pleased to welcome Tomas del Carpio as a new LAA Inspector, having attended an LAA Inspector Assessment Day at Turweston recently. Living in the historic village of the former RAF Upper Heyford base, aviation is a part of Tomas’ life even outside of my daily job of restoring and maintaining vintage and modern light aircraft. He has been in the aircraft maintenance industry since 2008 but the age range of aircraft. He has worked on spans more than a century of aviation history. From helping to restore an original AVRO 504 to carrying out advanced composite carbon fibre repairs on a Diamond DA42, his experience covers a broad and diverse spectrum of aircraft types and technologies - both certified and non-certified. Whether it’s performing an engine change on a King Air in the dusty heat of Malta or changing a tyre on a stranded PA-28 in a muddy field in Kent, He has encountered a wide variety of challenges and learned something valuable from each one. Tomas is always happy to help and share his knowledge and experience whether it’s offering technical advice over the phone or getting hands-on with something more involved. Next Previous

- LAA 'Grass Roots Fly-In' returns | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back LAA 'Grass Roots Fly-In' returns 23 Apr 2023 The LAA is returning to the green grass of Popham Aerodrome in Hampshire for a repeat of its “Grass Roots Fly In” from 18th to 20th August 2023. The Fly-In will again on one hand take the Associate back to its traditional roots, while continuing to offer the first chance to see some of the latest aircraft and products in the recreational aviation market. What was particularly notable about the 2022 Popham event was its sociality. LAA members and exhibitors alike commented on its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with post-event comments such as “It’s a great reunion as well as a fly-in–cum trade show” and “super friendly, the event always had a good vibe”. A joint venture with Popham Aerodrome, the LAA Grass Roots Fly In will develop its strengths as a social event bringing flyers from around the UK and Europe to meet fellow enthusiasts. The grass runways at Popham and the airfield’s famed rural ambience will mean that the event will focus on the fly-in and social element as much as on a large exhibition campus. The earlier mid-August date will also mean longer evenings, allowing more scope for flyers from further afield and hopefully, milder conditions for those who choose to ‘camp under the wing’. Said LAA CEO designate Simon Tilling: “The LAA Grass Roots Fly In was a great success last year, with over 3,000 visitors, more than 30 exhibitors and a total of 350 visiting aircraft through the weekend. It is a different event to the past, larger scale LAA Rallies and we’re working on plans for the continuation of a larger scale LAA event in the future. For this year, we’re looking forward to another great, social and fun, LAA fly in”. Next Previous
- MTD-06-2026 - Vixxen Forward Wing Attachment Reinforcement | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back MTD-06-2026 - Vixxen Forward Wing Attachment Reinforcement 14 Aug 2026 LAA Mandatory Technical Directive MTD-06-2026 Issue 1 has been issued today, relating to the inspection and reinforcement of the forward wing attachments of A-32 Vixxen and A-32-M Vixxen aircraft operating on an LAA Permit to Fly with Aeroprakt serial numbers up to and including #370 , which have accumulated 3000 flight hours or more. In December 2025, Aeroprakt issued Service Bulletin SB A32-25 to address cracking in the spar wall (web) and in the reinforcing plate near the forward wing attachment fitting, which, according to Aeroprakt, may lead to the disintegration of the aircraft in flight. Given the severe consequence identified in the Service Bulletin, this MTD is raised to mandate the reinforcement of the forward wing attachment fittings as described in SB A32-25 for aircraft within the applicable serial number range, which have accumulated 3000 flight hours or more. For aircraft in the affected serial number range which have not accumulated 3000 flight hours, the reinforcement remains a recommendation in line with SB A32-25. Please refer to the MTD below for full applicability, aircraft identification guidance, and compliance requirements. - Avgas UL91 & UL94 | Light Aircraft Assoc
Avgas UL91 & UL94 UL91 has been supplied at many airfields for a number of years. UL94 (similar to UL91 but with a slightly higher octane rating) is now becoming available. These fuels are suitable, and approved, for a wide range of engines types used in LAA aircraft. With 100LL being phased out over the coming years, now is an ideal time to see if your engine is compatible and help do your bit for the environment. The LAA Airworthiness Approval Note (AAN) for use of UL91 & UL94 in appropriate LAA aircraft can be found here . It contains a list of the most popular types of engines for which the fuel is suitable. The EASA document pertaining to use of UL91 in non LAA types is available here.
- MTD-05-2024 - Jabiru Distributor Caps - Issue 2 | Light Aircraft Assoc
< Back MTD-05-2024 - Jabiru Distributor Caps - Issue 2 23 Jul 2025 MTD-05-2024 - Jabiru Distributor Caps - has been upissued to Issue 2 today. This MTD can be found HERE and is also available below. On 10th July 2024, LAA Engineering published Issue 1 of MTD-05-2024. This was published due to apparent variations in the design of the distributor caps and rotor arms on Jabiru 2200 engines, which meant that, in some cases, there was insufficient clearance between the rotor arm and centre boss of the distributor cap, causing the contact button of the distributor cap to be flattened against its range of travel by the rotor arm, which causes extremely accelerated wear leading to ignition issues and potential engine failures. Today, Issue 2 of MTD-05-2024 has been issued, superseding Issue 1. Issue 1 of MTD-05-2024 detailed a method for ensuring sufficient clearance between the centre boss of the distributor cap and the rotor arm. This method has now been superseded by Jabiru’s Service Bulletin JSL050. LAA MTD-05-2024 Jabiru distributor cap Iss 2 .pdf Download PDF • 294KB Next Previous
